We are renting a car while on our vacation trip to Hawaii. We are staying in Waikiki Honolulu but plan on visiting some of the attractions outside of the Waikiki area. We have plans of driving out to the North Shore and to Lanikai and Kailua Beach. How long is it to drive from Waikiki to Lanikai Beach or Kailua Beach and is there a particular time that is best for us to visit these beaches?
The distance between Waikiki
The distance between Waikiki and Lanikai Beach is about 17.9 miles and is calculated to be about 40 minutes driving at an average "Hawaii speed" of about 30mph. Lanikai Beach and Kailua Beach are neighboring beaches so the distance from Waikiki to either of them is calculated at more or less the same.
The shortest and most scenic route to get there is by the Pali Highway, otherwise, take the Kalanianaole Highway east by Hawaii Kai.
Both Lanikai and Kailua are very beautiful beaches and is a favorite of many locals as well as visitors, the drive will definitely be worth it. The beaches are also not as crowded as the Waikiki Beach or those on the North Shore.
If you visit during the morning then you will avoid the traffic coming in the opposite direction, that is coming into Honolulu. Kailua and Lanikai Beaches are also some of the best locations on Oahu to see the sunrise if you can get there that early.
