Parking at Kapiolani Park

My husband and I will be visiting the beautiful island of Oahu May 18-23. We're staying at the New Otani Kaimana Beach hotel and parking for the entire week at the hotel will be $108. I've heard there is free parking at Kapiolani Park. Is this true? Also, how safe could I expect the car to be while parked overnight at Kapiolani (because I've also heard the homeless are allowed to camp there at night)?

Yes, parking at Kapiolani Park is free. In general it is safe, however DO NOT leave any valuables in the car that may entice someone to break in and steal. One of the biggest crimes on the island of Oahu is people having their cars broken into and valuable items such as GPS systems stolen. Use good judgment when you park in the area and keep in mind finding a spot with good or better lighting. Good luck and have yourself a great Hawaii vacation.
