Undoubtedly one of the most famous landmarks in Hawaii is the Diamond Head State Monument on the southeast coast of Oahu. It is located just minutes away from Waikiki, and the 360 degree panoramic views of Waikiki and Honolulu from the top of this famous extinct volcanic crater are absolutely breathtaking. The climb to the top of this 760 foot summit, though a bit challenging for some, is quite rewarding in the end.

During the winter months from November to April, whale watchers flock to the peaks of Diamond Head to see Humpback Whales frolic in the Pacific. This is an excellent 2 for the price of one activity. The park is opened from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. for an admissions price of $1 and parking for $5.

Our Tips

On your climb to the top of Diamond Head be sure to bring with you plenty of drinking water, sunscreen, a hat or visor to shade you from the sun and of course your camera to capture those awesome sceneries. If you did not rent a car, The Bus can get you there. Route 22 or 23 will leave you outside of the entrance. There are two sets of stairs along the trails to the top, with a total of 175 steps combined. Consider taking a pair of hiking boots, a small backpack with essentials, and a lot of stamina - it is actually much harder going up than it looks!
