Hawaii is famous for its many beautiful beaches, and the beaches on Oahu are amongst the best of the islands. The Oahu beaches listed below are in no way listed in order from best to worst beaches on Oahu or Hawaii, but are however amongst the highest rated on the island.

Ala Moana Beach Park

Ala Moana Beach is a free 76 acre beach park equipped with tennis courts, shaded picnic areas, reef protected swimming spots and lifeguards. The park is located across from the Ala Moana Center and is opened daily from 5 am to 10 pm. This beach is good for swimming and surfing and provides a great view of the Waikiki shoreline. At the east end of the beach is Magic Island (Aina Moana), a small sheltered bay excellent for kiddy water activities. This beach park is great for a family outing.

Sunset Beach - North Shore

Sunset beach, located on the North Shore, is another of Hawaii`s many world famous beaches. During the summer months, the waters off Sunset Beach are calm and great for swimming and snorkeling. During the winter months, however, this remarkable beach is the prime surf venue for annual surf competitions and surf enthusiasts. Waves towering as high as 35 feet in height have been spotted on Sunset Beach. Windsurfing is another popular activity that can be seen on Sunset Beach. Both surfing and windsurfing equipment are available for rent on Sunset Beach. There are also numerous surfing schools that offer surfing lessons for those interested. Though synonymous with surfing, Sunset beach provides a breathtaking view of the sunset at dusk.

Lanikai Beach

Lanikai Beach is one of the most breathtaking beaches in Hawaii. It borders Kailua Beach just off Kailua Rd where both beaches share many perfect features and conditions. Rent a kayak and paddle to the pair of Mokulua islands just off the shores of the beach. Hawaiian Green Sea turtles along with many colorful birds can be spotted on these islands. Besides being a favorite of the locals, many celebrities have often been spotted at Lanikai Beach. Both Lanikai and Kailua Beaches are great places to be at sunrise and provides great escapes from the more crowded beaches of Waikiki.

Hanauma Bay Beach

Hanauma Bay Nature Preserve, located at 7455 Kalaniana`ole Highway (SR 72), is perfect for swimming, picnicking or sunbathing. This very beautiful and legendary bay is the ideal location for snorkeling or scuba diving on Oahu. It is usually very crowded so go early in the morning to avoid the long lines. Hanauma Bay opens daily from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. and is closed on Tuesdays. Admission to the park is $5 and parking is $1. Snorkel gears and life jackets are available for renting. There are numerous tours and shuttle services that provide trips to Hanauma Bay, some at very reasonable prices.

Waimea Bay Beach

Waimea Bay Beach, just minutes south of the North Shore, is another ideal surf venue. Like most North Shore beaches, waters are calm in the summer and ideal for swimming but are ferocious during the winter and perfect for surfing. Other activities such as windsurfing and sailing are also popular on Waimea Beach and surf equipment rentals and surfing lessons are available on the beach.

Kuhio Beach

Kuhio Beach is located on the shores of Waikiki at the landmark Duke Kahanamoku Statue. This beach is excellent for surfing and swimming and also offers a reef protected shallow water area idea for younger kids and non swimmers. Rent a surfboard, take surfing lessons or just bask in the Waikiki sun while you work on getting that perfect tan.

Kailua Beach Park

Kailua Beach is one of Oahu`s most beautiful beaches and is a favorite of many locals. It is located just off Kailua Rd in the town of Kailua on the eastern shores of Oahu. The beautiful fine white sandy shores of Kailua Beach are perfect for sunbathing and relaxation. There are also many shaded picnic areas along the beach that makes for a wonderful family outing. Kayaking, surfboarding, sailing and windsurfing are all very popular activities at Kailua Beach. There are a few kiosks along the beach that offers kayaking and windsurfing equipment rentals as well as surfing and kayaking lessons. Admission to this beach is free.

Oahu's Famous Waikiki Beach

The world famous Waikiki Beach is a 2 mile stretch of beautiful beach sand extending from the Hilton Hawaiian Village Hotel (the pink hotel) to the Natatorium War Memorial. Flanked by world renowned Waikiki hotels and shopping areas on one side and the majestic warm blue pacific waters on the other, the colorful beauty and specter of Waikiki can be seen in full flight. Equipped with lifeguards, the beach is excellent for swimming and surfing and provides reef protected swimming areas ideal for kids. Surfboards can be rented along the beach and surf lessons are available for those interested in learning the sport. Though this beach can be very crowded and filled with activities during the daytime, it is well worth the experience. The outlook of Waikiki Beach is spectacular at sunrise.
